Villages of Garifuna

Villages of Garifuna are located in the northern coast of Honduras. In the seventeenth century, black carobs arrived to the shores, and till date their descendents are found in this village following the way of life that their ancestors' followed. Cristales is the closest and accessible town of Garifuna to Trujillo and is also a “barrio” of Trujillo. You can walk to this town from any of the hotels of Trujillo. William Walker's Tomb

William walker, the great North American adventurer, decided to win over Central America for USA. He was the government head, in Nicaragua. He fought against Honduras and Costa Rica with his troop. At Trujillo, he was captured and killed by firing. A tomb is been built in his memory and can be seen in the cemetery of municipal, Trujillo.

Museum

Explore the gadgets collections displayed in the personal museum at Trujillo. There is a good exhibition of artifacts of pre-Columbian era and artifacts that are pertinent to the people of Trujillo. Museum charges a fee for its entrance which is Lps.5.00. It is within walking distance and local people offer direction when asked.

Guaimoreto Lagoon

Another protected area is the Guaumoreto Lagoon which introduces a large and complicated system for mangrove forest and canals. This place is the favorite nesting ground for birds in huge numbers, in winter season. You can get inside this area by the help of boat. Try to take a trip by boat from the bridge that is in between Trujillo to Castilla. This place is worth spending time.

Santa Barbara Fortress

This fort was built to protect this city from enemy attack at a time when it was very much at the mercy of any attack. Today it is a heritage building that showcases the history of past times. Experience the common view of Caribbean colonial towns, as cannons are faced out to bay. This fortress was recently renovated, and an up to date exhibition showroom has been made during this restoration. The museum inside displays a huge collection of artifacts and the traditions of Garifuna culture, which is predominating culture around the Trujillo area. The opening time in morning is 8.00 a.m. and open until noon. Again it opens 1.00 p.m. and open till 4 p.m. the entrance charge is around US$ 3.00 per visitor and this fortress is open everyday.
